Episode #8 – “Rising Above The Noise”

This week on the Cabana, I’m talking about the importance of “rising above the noise”.  I don’t mean audio noise (although, you should always deliver audio that is free of noise…but that’s a subject for a different day). 😉  I’m speaking about the noise in our own heads and the noise that comes from others. It’s important to not let insecurities or negativity get in the way of our success.  This is one of the top things I see that holds talent back from reaching their potential. This week, let’s discuss the Zen of rising above the static and achieving our goals!

Marc Preston

Marc Preston has spent the last thirty years working as a professional voiceover talent.  He’s voiced countless projects on his journey, from national advertising campaigns, to network promos and everything in between.  Beyond his work on the mic, he’s spent a fair amount of time on-camera.  From the time he was seven years old, he’s appeared in a variety of film and television projects.  He also spent time as a major market radio talent, as well as hosted his own national syndicated show on the ABC Radio Networks. For the past two decades, Marc has taken this bank of experience and shared it with hundreds of voiceover students from around the world.  As a voiceover coach and consultant, he’s worked with a variety of talented performers.  He’s been sought out by numerous films and television actors, and been instrumental in helping them to effectively bridge their acting skillset to voiceover. Marc embraces every opportunity to “pay it forward” and be of service to talent at every level of experience.  He founded and oversees one of the largest social media portals in the world for voiceover professionals.  “The VoiceOver Community” (and Facebook group of the same name) provides a daily resource for thousands of talent to connect, collaborate, learn and enjoy a sense of community with fellow voiceover professionals. Marc is executive producer and host of the “Story & Craft” podcast.  Each week, he interviews actors, directors, creatives, entertainment industry professionals and thought leaders.  This has created a growing library of chats with Academy and Emmy Award winners, veteran talent and creates – all of which offer inspiration and insight into the creative process.  In addition to his own efforts, Marc has also been honored with the opportunity to collaborate with the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences as a both a host/panelist for That’s Voiceover!, as well as a judge for the Voice Arts Awards.Marc believes in always being a “working student.”  Learning and evolving as a professional talent is important.  Equally important to Marc, is the opportunity to mentor, contribute and help raise the bar for an industry that has given him so much over the past three decades.

Episode #7 – “The Voice Actor Prepares”

Next to training with a voiceover coach, getting quality acting training can greatly elevate a VO talent’s delivery.  Learning how to tap into emotion can help to take a simple “read” and turn it into an authentic and real interpretation of a moment.  These are essential skills for capturing and holding the viewer/listeners attention. Voice talent are storytellers. To truly pull someone into a story, you need to reach them emotionally.  Without emotion, the viewer or listener can’t truly become passionate about the story or the message.

For established actors, making the transition into voiceover isn’t as simple as grabbing a microphone and implementing their acting training.  Voiceover is its own craft. Actors need to learn and appreciate the nuances of what separates being on camera from being on a microphone. As voice talent, we rely solely on voice as a means of pulling someone into a story.  We don’t have the benefit of body language, facial expression or other actors (except in specific occasions, such as animation). That means that you will be applying your familiar skillset in a new way. So, stop on by the “Cabana” this week, as we dive into “A Voice Actor Prepares”.

Episode #6 – “Contracts & Getting Paid”

In voiceover, the aspect of “contracts/agreements” and “getting paid” are often discussed as part of the same conversation.  If you’re not working under a SAG/AFTRA contact and/or have an agent working out the particulars of the “deal”, then you will be responsible for making sure the “i’s” are dotted and “t’s” are crossed after you book the gig.  This can be confusing for anyone new to voiceover, as well as some working talent. In this episode, I will give you some general notes on contracts, as well as some info on how to make the payment process a bit easier. This info is NOT intended to be legal advice…but notes for you to bring to an attorney.   I highly recommend you invest in a few hours with an attorney, so as to get you some quality and enforceable contract templates to use in each area of voiceover in which you work. This episode will help you get the ball rolling and thinking about how to better organize this aspect of your voiceover business.

Episode #5 – “Working Smart | A Daily VO Success Plan”

Success in voiceover takes more than just good coaching/training and a solid demo.  Those things are essential for success. However, to really move the needle and see progress, you need to develop good daily habits. I’ll give you my “daily three” that I give to all of my students…three simple things that I still make sure to implement each day.  Your “business” (and it is a business, after all) is bringing your voice to the world. To do that, you need to set focused goals and stay on task each day to make those goals happen. Join me this week as we talk about “working smart” and how you can (and should) implement a daily routine to take you where you want to go in VO.

Episode #4 – “Websites”

When it comes to a voiceover talent’s marketing, a solid website is essential.  Your website is not just a repository of demos and contact info, but the primary way a talent establishes and showcases their “brand”.  In this week’s episode, I talk with you about some of the essential elements of a quality website. We’ll touch on some of the things to do and not do when it comes to your online branding.  So, grab a beverage and sit down in the cabana, as we talk about how to craft an effective and memorable website.

Episode #3 – “Demos”

In this episode, I discuss “demos”.  No matter where you are in your voiceover career, you need to have great sounding demos that showcase what you are capable of.  For a new talent, recording your first demo is exciting stuff! For established talent, it’s always a cool experience to update your demo, as well as create your first demo in a new genre of voiceover.  I will clarify “what” a demo is and how to know when you are ready to record your first one. I’ll also discuss how to find the “right” demo producer, as well as how to stay away from the most common mistakes that new and developing talent make on the way to getting their first demo knocked out.  So, grab a beverage and hang out with me in the VoiceOver Cabana, as we talk “demos”!

Episode #2 – “Coaches”

In this episode of “Preston’s VoiceOver Cabana”, I discuss why it’s so important to get training with the right coach.  I also touch on the very real paradigm of predatory charlatans who tout themselves as “coaches”. I’ll give you some simple and easy to follow tips on how to steer clear of these snake oil salesmen, as well as how to find the “right” coach.  For new voice talent, guided training is mission critical for getting you set on the right path for success. For established talent, this objective evaluation and “update” to your training is what will keep you in the game. Tiger Woods has been a successful pro for a very long time. Yet, he has a coach…and he just got himself a fancy green jacket! 😉  Whether you’re a new or established voice talent, I welcome you to come on in to the cabana and sit down for a chat that will invigorate you and dial you into the Zen of good coaching…and success!
