Our commitment
The VoiceOver Community is committed to making thevoiceovercommunity.com usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. We want every member and visitor to be able to read our magazine, join the conversation, take courses, use our directories and get in touch with us.
Standard we follow
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people who are blind or have low vision, are deaf or hard of hearing, or have motor, cognitive or speech disabilities.
Current status
thevoiceovercommunity.com partially conforms to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This means some parts of the site do not yet fully meet the standard. They are listed under “Known limitations” below.
What we’ve done
In November 2026 we tested every public page of the site and fixed the issues we found. This work included:
- Adding text descriptions (alt text) to every image in our media library, and automatic descriptions for member profile pictures.
- Darkening text, menu, button, label and link colors so they meet contrast requirements.
- Giving every page a main heading and clear page regions (header, main content, footer) so screen reader users can move around quickly.
- Naming buttons and links that show only an icon or a picture, such as search, menu, back to top, share, social media icons and slideshow links.
- Labeling form fields in sign-up, sign-in, profile, directory filter, event and classified forms.
- Underlining links that appear inside text so they don’t rely on color alone.
- Enlarging small controls, such as slideshow dots, category labels, social icons, comment buttons and the podcast player’s progress bar, so they are easier to tap.
Known limitations
Despite our efforts, some content may not be fully accessible yet:
- Member content. Posts, photos, audio and comments shared by members may not include descriptions, captions or transcripts. We encourage members to describe the images they share.
- Third-party tools. Parts of the site are provided by outside software, including our community platform, online courses, the events calendar, directories, the classifieds editor, the shop checkout and payment providers. Some of their controls (for example the text editor toolbar in the classifieds form and the markers on directory maps) do not fully meet the standard, and we cannot change all of their code.
- Embedded media. Videos, podcast players and social media posts embedded from outside services rely on those services for captions, transcripts and keyboard support. Older podcast episodes and videos may not have transcripts.
- Older magazine content. Some older articles and graphics contain text inside images. If you need that text, contact us and we will send it to you.
If any of this gets in your way, please contact us and we will provide the information another way.
Technologies used
The accessibility of this site relies on HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WAI-ARIA working with your web browser and any assistive technologies or plugins installed on your computer.
How we test
We test every public page with automated accessibility checking tools (axe-core), and we review the results by hand to confirm each fix. We review the site at least once a year and after major changes.
