The classic Neve 1073 wrote the book on characterful mic preamplification, so in designing their 1073MPF single-channel mic/line preamp, BAE aimed high. It’s amazing how well they succeeded. Done up in classic RAF blue-gray livery, the hand-wired, transformer-coupled, pure Class A 1073MPF is quite versatile, with 71dB of gain that lets you capture subdued sources with your favorite ribbon mic. Cranking the main gain stage enhances your tracks with tasty vintage-style coloration. The 1073MPF includes a highpass filter that lets you roll off mud, rumble, and other low-frequency content that can mar an otherwise perfect take. Under the bonnet reside the finest components, such as Carnhill transformers — like those found in vintage 1073s. Also onboard: a DI jack, polarity reverse, 48V phantom power, and selectable impedance to optimally match a variety of microphones. The 1073MPF delivers distinctive Class A sound with a harmonically rich bottom end, focused midrange, and slightly resonant highs. If you want a pre with personality and punch, Sweetwater recommends the BAE 1073MPF. It’s the sound of rock ‘n’ roll.
